According to thatgamecompany designer Jenova Chen, the reason why games likeFlowerandJourneyare on the PlayStation Network is that PS3 owners are more mature than Xbox 360 or Wii users. Apparently, those who bought the Black Box o’ Blu-ray are far more likely to appreciate a cerebral game.

“Sony has a more artistic and adult-focused taste,” said Chen. “They care about how grown-ups feel toward their games. The player who owns a PlayStation 3 is more likely to be interested in artistic games compared to Wii and Xbox 360.”

While neither Microsoft nor Nintendo would respond, Sony gleefully agreed with Chen’s statement. Digital chiefJack Buser added: “Many PlayStation and PSN games have themes that require a user to think and feel about a deep, immersive gameplay experience, and we see that exemplified in the success of titles likeFlower,Journey, andHeavy Rain. Titles like these can only be found on PlayStation, and our users enjoy the emotional and thematic sophistication of their games, especially with our digital offerings.”

There’s no denying that Sony took all the big risks with interesting and more thoughtful IP this generation. For that, it deserves much commendation. Still, it’s quite ironic that PS3 users allegedly prefer more adult games, considering they act like such insecure children if you criticize any of them. I guess it’s swings and roundabouts.
