If you want to walk on the darker side of Cyrodil, all you have to do is join the Dark Brotherhood. That said, the secretive assassin group isn’t exactly advertising its presence. Players will have to attract the attention of the Dark Brotherhood before it opens its doors to newcomers.

In addition to the various quests and branching story objectives, there are heaps of optional factions and content to explore. Sword and board adventurers can join a Fighters Guild, spellcasters can pursue the Mages Guild, and even the rogues have the Thieves Guild. But what about the murderous psychopaths among us?

A call from Lucien Lachance
Naturally, if you want to attract the attention of a group of assassins, you have to prove you can get your hands dirty. Players can attract the attention of the Dark Brotherhood by committing a murder. Any murder will do, so long as it’s not someone who’d be aggressive towards you anyway, like a bandit. Of course, players should prepare for the potential fallout from the attack if the victim has any time to react or if they’re near other NPCs.
Once someone is slain by your hand, text will appear onscreen noting, “Your killing has been observed by forces unknown.” After that, players can find any enclosed room with a bed (like an inn’s room) to sleep for at least one hour. You will awake in the presence of a man in black robes named Lucien Lachance. He’ll greet you, noting, “You sleep rather soundly for a murderer.”
Regardless of how you choose to react to the character, he’ll identify himself as the Speaker of the Dark Brotherhood. Lucien notes how you’ve been selected as a potential initiate. All you have to do to complete the initiation is find and kill a man named Rufio. To aid in the task, the NPC offers intel that Rufio is located at theInn of Ill Omenand provides the Blade of Woe to complete the job.
A Knife in the Dark
Players will get a marker for the Inn of Ill Omen on their map. It’s located along the main road between the Imperial City and Bravil. The quickest way to reach the locale is to fast travel to Bravil’s Bay Roan Stables and then hoof it from there. Once at the Inn, players can talk to the owner to learn that Rufio is downstairs through a hatch in the floor by the entryway.
Rufio will likely be asleep in bed when players stumble upon him. If you have any skill in Sneak, it should be enough to approach the man without waking him. If he does wake up, or players choose to talk to him, he may realize what will happen, depending on the dialogue choice. You should be ready to chase him and slash him down before he can make it back upstairs if that’s the case. And, of course, make sure you’re using the Blade of Woe.
Like before, Lucien wants to talk to players in a safe place. Thankfully, you’re already in an inn, and those conditions can be met pretty easily. Players can either sleep in Rufio’s bed or in the one in the next room over. Lucien will appear once again and congratulate you on joining the family. He’ll instruct you to find the local Dark Brotherhood chapter hidden in Cheydinhal.
Inside the city, near the eastern wall, there’s an abandoned house. Enter the basement and approach the black door. When asked a question, respond,“Sanguine, my Brother.”Inside, seek Ocheeva, who’ll start players down the path of the Dark Brotherhood in earnest.
