Deliberation with Sony is furthest along; Wii U release entirely plausible
Dreamfall Chaptersraised around$1.5 million in Kickstarterfunding earlier this year. The 3D adventure game is the sequel to beloved adventure gamesThe Longest JourneyandDreamfall: The Longest Journey, both available on GOG. I downloaded both at the behest of Destructoid’s resident adventure game aficionado Fraser Brown in anticipation ofDreamfall Chapters, which will be launching next year. According to lead developer Ragnar Tornquist, speaking to Eurogamer, “the chances are extremely good that we’ll land on one or both of the next-gen consoles.”
I think the recent success ofThe Walking Dead, albeit an already hugely established name, helps prove adventure games can be successful on consoles. At least one console manufacturer seems keen on the game appearing on its system. “I’ve officially also said that Sony is a lot more inviting and welcoming to indie developers,” Tornquist said, “so it’s a lot easier for us to start that dialogue and get support. It is a bit harder with Microsoft but it’s not like we’re excluding anything.”

Even the Wii U is on the table, though Tornquist noted they “can’t make any promises because the the Wii U, it’s underpowered compared to the next-gen consoles and PC obviously,” while a tablet release is on the table as well. Tornquist also noted the team plans “to get back toThe Longest Journey Home,” the 2D point-and-click direct sequel toThe Longest Journey, while also planning to work on some “smaller things in theDreamfallUniverse” and new IP. GoodDreamfall Chapterssales could abet this process; if not, there’s always a return to Kickstarter.
