Following the announcement thatThe Final Shapegot postponed, Bungie has slowly been cooking a free interim content drop,Destiny 2: Into the Light. Drenched in nostalgia,Into the Lighthas a slew of returning content, but an all-new set of Destiny 1-inspired armor isn’t on the docket after all.
This clarification comes afterthe latest TWID blog post, where Bungie said that its nextDestiny 2: Into the Lightlivestream – slated for March 26, 10 AM PT – would discuss the all-new Brave weapon set, whichmay or may not include certain Black Armory weapons, the release of a wholly new social space, and sets of “Destiny 1-inspired armor and more.”
This statement, naturally,immediately thrilled some players, who were hoping that the original game’s legendary showcase armor sets would finally make their way intoDestiny 2. Not the case, however, as Bungie subsequently issued a correction of the statement explaining what wasactuallymeant.
No Destiny 1-themed armor for Into the Light, Bungie says
“Quick correction to the TWID,” says aReddit postfrom the Destiny2Team account. “The upcoming armor set for Destiny 2: Into the Light is not inspired directly by Destiny 1 armor, but early armor concepts from Year 1 of Destiny 2. Sorry for the mix-up! We’ll show off the armor and more in the developer stream next week.”
For fans of the more sci-fi aesthetic of the originalDestiny, this came as disappointing news, but it does make sense in the grand scheme of things. The armor sets in question, which can be seen in nearly all of theInto the Lightpromotional materials, seem like the stylistic evolution of theold year 1 armor setsthatDestiny 2players used before the Red War. So, overall, it appears to have been a simple mistake that got taken out of context, but it’s still a tad disappointing if you’re a fan of the (arguably) more grounded aesthetic of the original title.
The availability of custom new armor is just one miniscule aspect ofInto the Lightas a whole, however. The Brave weapon set, for one, is extremely exciting as it appears to include some of the game’s most popular old weapons, many of which were sunset back in the day. Further,the update’s Onslaught game modeis a veritable horde mode that players have been asking for all along, so it should give players something to do while they wait forThe Final Shapeto get rolled out properly.
If nothing else, it’s going to be an interesting time forDestinyand Bungie as a whole, as the company seems to be going through significant turmoil in the background. Even Bungie’s upcoming extraction shooter,Marathon, isn’t precluded from the issues, as it hadreportedly pivoted towards being a hero shooter, of all things.
