All’s Fair in love and remasters
According to Square Enix, you won’t need to have playedFinal Fantasy VIIorFinal Fantasy VII Remakein order to playCrisis Core Reunion. It also works as a standalone story, with its own adventure that unfolds.
That said, the expanded universe stuff is really all about seeing it all come together. And considering how Zack seems to be playing a big part in the also-announcedFinal Fantasy VII Rebirth, this might be a good bit of homework to do before next winter.

The big question is, obviously, will any of the story content change? Zack Fair’s status in theRemakecontinuum is clearly quite different from the original.Remakealso seems to be linked to the original series, in a veryRebuild of Evangelionmanner. Things are about to get wacky and wild with the timeline and deeper lore questions. Hopefully we get some answers this winter.
